121 – Caddo Lake State Park Bigfoot – Uncertain, TX

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett kick off summer right with a trip to Uncertain, Texas. Yes, we are sure.

Harley had a great interview with Ken Gerhard, a cryptozoologist and field investigator for The Centre for Fortean Zoology. We discuss the Caddo Lake State Park Bigfoot and the similar sightings in the area including some outings with Lyle Blackburn and the Fouke Monster.

What is Bigfoot?

What can you do to increase your chances of a Bigfoot encounter?

What is the Devil’s Elbow?

What project is Ken working on?

Uncertain, TX was originally called this by the surveyors, because they were Uncertain to whether this place was in Texas or Louisianna. The local sheriff was quoted as saying, “You’ve got to either know where you’re goin’ or be lost to find it.”

Need more Bigfoot? The Texas Bigfoot Research Center runs the Original Texas Bigfoot Conference just down the road in Jefferson, TX. Check it out and you just might meet. Bob Gimlin, Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Lyle Blackburn, Ken Gerhard, Nick Redfern, or Shelly Covington-Montana.

The Shady Glade Cafe may be the only restaurant around, but that hasn’t stopped them from making some crazy good country cookin’!

Play

Harley and Amy are traveling to swamp country, to soak in an oddity that has all the makings of a terrifying thrill ride. Welcome to Prattville, AL, home of the Specters of Bear Creek Swamp.

The phenomenon in this area go way back into the past and there is something for everybody. From ghosts to bigfoot and chupacabra to haunted dolls…this place really has it all.

There is definitley some weirdness in the swamps her, but Prattville is older than the state of Alabama and there are activities for any taste. This is a road trip that you have to make.

If you don’t want to trudge through the swamp, you could always take part in their annual 4th of July cardboard boat race.

The Travel Oddities Podcast restaurant pick is a place called Fat Boy’s BBQ Ranch because Amy’s diet has given her a one-=track-appetite.

The Top 5…Did you know that Alabama has a state biscuit? Do they have state gravy? Listen to the show already!

99 – The Spottsville Monster – Owensboro, KY

Play

We are back in Kentucky and hoping that we don’t offend the locals(like last time).

Brett and Amy are traveling to Owensboro and a spot on the map, called Spottsville to find an oddity that is so terrifying that the locals just call it the Spottsville monster.

So what is the Spottsville monster? How does a red-eyed, chicken stealing bigfoot sound?

This cryptid is spooky, but don’t let that sway you from the fun along the banks of the Green River.

There is more to do in the town of Owensboro than you could find at Disneyland.

We discuss the Haunts of Owensboro Ghost Tour and then Amy explains why haunted carriage rides are not for picky agoraphobes with no taste for the outdoors.

If you are planning a trip to hunt for the Spottsville Monster, be sure to pack your spell-book so you can try some voodoo Supernatural tricks which will be fully explained in this very special episode.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and Amy and Brett decided to go all high class with Shrimp from Bill’s Restaurant.

The Top 5 some sticky stuff on the back, so we are going to write our grocery list on it….some of us need sleep, so deal with my weird ramblings or just listen to the damn show already.

96 – Raven’s Grin Inn – Mount Carroll, IL

Play

Grab a coat and button up, Oddballs. It gets a bit chilly where we’re heading. The beautiful New England-esque town of Mount Carroll Illinois holds the record for some frigid temperatures but the beauty of the quaint little midwestern town is sure to warm you right up.

What do you do with a ramshackle old 19th century mansion with no plumbing or electricity that sits just a block away from a creepy old cemetery? If you’re Jim Warfield, you drop three grand on it and spend the next 20 years fulfilling your lifelong dream of creating your very own wacky house of horrors. And if creepy secret passageways and slides that shoot you from the roof to 24 feet underground aren’t enough to lure you in, there are always the real ghosts…..

While you’re in town, stop by the Timber Lake Playhouse and grab a seat for their current stage production of Howard Ashman’s Little Shop of Horrors. Opened in 1962, they are the oldest semiprofessional summer stock theater company in Illinois.

Where do the hair impaired in Mount Carroll go to grab a quick bite to eat? To the BaldGuyz Coffee and Bistro, of course! Monster cheese burgers, Italian sodas and cinnamon bun frappes will leave you drooling on Granny’s apron. Tell her we said hi! And the good news is, you don’t have to be bald to indulge in their delicious fare. Just don’t rub it in with the focially impaired.

94 – The Monsters of Devil’s Lake – Baraboo WI

Play

The shadowy spirits elephants, mysterious disappearances, native legends and the most beautiful landscapes you could wish to see on any road trip. We’re traveling to the heart of the dairy belt to visit the Devil’s Lake State Park to dive into some very disturbing legends.

Don’t let the postcard views of this gem in Wisconsin fool you. This town seems to be a hotbed of the paranormal. From lake monsters to Bigfoot to ghosts and native american curses, Baraboo has it all.

If you aren’t feeling like taking on the local oddities, there is fishing, boating, kayaking and camping adventures for all. I would say to watch out for bears…but they say there are none. Maybe the giant ghost mammoths ate them?

If the outdoors and the paranormal are not your cup of tea, this town is home to Circus World. This is a working circus and museum devoted to the history of the circus, with artifacts and exhibits and tigers!

No trip to the cheese capitol of the world would be complete without stopping in to the Gem City Saloon and Eatery for a cheesy slice of the “best pizza in Wisconsin.

93 – Ghosts of Smallwood’s Store – Chokoloskee, FL

Play

The shadowy spirits of long dead outlaws, unsolved murders, whispered secrets and fried green tomatoes……..this roadtrip ain’t for the faint of heart. We’re headed deep into the wilds of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge for a visit to Ted Smallwood’s legendary Smallwood Store on Chokoloskee Island.

If you’ve got the nerve to brave the labyrinth of mangrove islands, back wood marshes, brackish ponds and winding channels , you’ll discover a wild land steeped in history and shrouded in myth. Step into Smallwood’s and step back in time as you peruse the shelves of this 1920’s time capsule But don’t be fooled by the beauty of this amazing landscape. Ghosts walk these old plank floors, who’s secrets have yet to be told.

This is an outdoors man’s (or woman’s) paradise. Fishing, boating, kayaking and camping adventures abound. There are plenty of guided canoe or kayak trips, dolphin ecotours and birding or wildlife powerboat tours for newbies. Our Defense Against The Dark Arts will hopefully protect you from the mosquitoes and the elusive Florida panthers…….hopefully……

Once you get your land legs back, head on over to Triad Seafood in Everglades City for home made desserts and it’s infamous “All You Can Eat Stone Crab”. We hear the Alligator Tail is pretty tasty, too. This no frills eatery offers gorgeous views of the Barron River and a Key Lime pie so good, it’s been know to make grown men drop to their knees in the middle of the restaurant, throw their hands in the air and uncontrollably weep with unbridled gastric ecstasy….not really. But it’s supposed to be really good.

No trip to the Everglades would be complete without a trip to the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in Ochopee, Florida. We’ll discuss the “Jane Goodall of Skunk Apes” and find out the Skunk Ape’s favorite snacks. Let’s just hope it’s not chubby podcasters from Oklahoma!
