136 – Demon Leaper – Louisville, KY

Play

On ep 136 of The Travel Oddities Podcast, look out Louisville! The boys are back in town and this time they’re hot on the trail of the Louisville Demon Leaper. This time around Brett promises to keep his halves to minimum.

As anyone who visits soon discovers, Louisville is one of the most uniquely authentic destinations on the planet. Welcome to “Bourbon City!”
Yes, Bourbon is a spirit that comes in a glass, but it’s also a spirit that defines their culture and compassion, their arts and parks, their creative energy. It’s this same spirit that continued and created Louisville itself – a city that combines heritage with innovation, authenticity with originality, quirkiness with friendliness in a way that’s completely unique.

While this isn’t their first trip to Louisville and definitely not their first cryptid, this may in fact be a Travel Oddities first, though..a Gargoyle. That’s right, The Louisville Demon Leaper has been terrorizing residents and onlookers at the Walnut Baptist Church for years. A creature believed to be a cross between a Moth Man and some even say Batman?

If gargoyles and Batmen aren’t in the itinerary then you definitely need to check out Bardstown Road. It’s the Vegas strip of the South without deviant behavior and showgirls. Although there may in fact be show girls. There is soooo much to do on Bardstown that they could hardly fit it in. Some deep cuts and choice cuts were made but you’re bound to find something to do and eat.

Speaking of eating on Bardstown. This week they hit another national treasure, Jack Fry’s. This gem dates back to the ‘30s and is a must when you are in the area.

130 – Clown Motel – Tonopah, NV

Play

On this week’s episode, Brett and Harley are feeling the heat in Tonopah, NV to check out the Clown Motel. Tonapah is halfway between Reno and Vegas…so basically in the middle of the desert.

The Clown Motel on the other hand is perfect only to fill your nights with horrific nightmares and flashbacks to Stephen King’s IT or the movie Poltergeist.

Is the Clown Motel haunted?

What is miner’s clap?

What is the Tonopah Plague?

What is Coulrophilia?

What percentage of the world has Culdrophobia?

If want don’t like clowns, zombies or ghosts, how about geocaching? Tonopah is a geocaching mecca and we have the scoop.

We also check out the Tonopah Brewing Company where their motto is “Blood,Sweat and Beers” and there specialty Craft Brews and BBQ.

OS – Gurnsey Hollow Cemetery – Frewsberg, NY

Play

The haunting and sad history of the Gurnsey Hollow cemetery is filled with murder and tragedy. No wonder the spectral shenanigans of a long dead little girl still plague the visitors to this out of the way spot. Brett and Amy talk dead child ghosts and other weirdness.

79 – I-4 Dead Zone – Sanford, FL

Play

Can you hear me now? On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy take the long way to the oddity that is the I-4 Dead Zone in Sanford, FL.

***Warning. We have some audio anomalies, and we are back to blaming gremlins***

This oddity is creepy. This oddity got its start in the pioneer days when an unnamed family was not given a proper burial due to fear of yellow fever.

This family has haunted the area around the graves for over one hundred years, and for anyone that desecrates these graves, there is hell to pay. These graves are now under a major highway. Today there are tales of technology inexplicably failing in the area and ghostly voices over the radio.

If you are near Sanford Florida you should watch out for ghostly hitchhikers and don’t veer off the path.

We also discuss the town of Sanford. You can also visit for things other than the haunted highway. Sanford has one of the coolest zoos we have ever researched.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and The Smiling Bison fits the bill. They have house made potato chips, cheesy bacon fat biscuits, a house-made spin on Cheez-Its, and something called The Brunch Dog.

The Top 5 list is filled with stupid laws.

75 – Westminster Burying Ground – Baltimore MD

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy explore the catacombs of Westminster Burying Ground in historic Baltimore, MD.

***Warning. We have some audio anomalies, and we are currently blaming gremlins***

This oddity is one of steeped in history. It starts with the life and death of Edgar Allan Poe. We discuss grave robbers, ghosts, screaming skulls, weird traditions, lost graves, conspiracies and tragedy. Amy really did her homework on this show and Harley really thinks its gross that Poe married his cousin. We also discuss the Poe Toaster, and that is not an author sized cooking device.

In The News: McDonald’s has a new menu and a new utensil that you really don’t need, ever, for any reason. What the Frork am I talking about?

We discuss Baltimore, Maryland, including the Poe House. There are more famous people from Baltimore than we could list in one show, but we made sure that David Hasslehoff made the list!

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and “pit beef” is a thing in Maryland, so we found THE place to eat that.

Brett’s Top 5 is back.

This show is Balti”more” than you can handle.

71 – Norwichtown Cemetery – Norwich, CT

Play

We are considering changing the name of the show to Harley talks to smart people. On this week’s episode, we work our way through down a cobblestone street to the Norwichtown Cemetery in historic Norwich, CT.

This oddity is a classic. It starts during the Revolution, developed some cold spots, and now has Benedict Arnold visiting his mom’s grave every Halloween. It looks beautiful and creepy.

Zachary Lamothe stopped by for discussion about this Norwich. Hailing from Norwich, Connecticut, Zack grew up in a house built in 1752 and from an early age was always intrigued by local lore and history. Zack studied New England history and folklore while a student at Boston University, attaining a degree in American Studies. He earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education at Southern Connecticut State University and has taught high school special education and history. He is a frequent contributor to Norwich Magazine where he writes about history, community profiles, and tourism as well as other written and web based publications. His first book, Connecticut Lore: Strange, Off Kilter, and Full of Surprises was released in 2013 and the sequel More Connecticut Lore was released in 2016, both from Schiffer Publications.

We discuss Norwich, CT, the history and the modern. This town has no shortage of adventures, if you just take the time to explore.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and Zack introduced us to the grinder.
