89 – Grave of the Greenbriar Ghost – Lewisburg, WV

Play

After a midweek intervention and come-to-Jesus meeting, Amy joins Harley for episode 89, The Grave of the Greenbriar Ghost in Lewisburg West Virginia.

On this episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast, we’re discussing how the after death visitations to her momma made this the only known case in which testimony from a ghost helped covict a murderer.

Zona Heaster Shue had crap taste in men but a very keen sense of justice. We discuss the murder, burial and exumation of sweet young Zona as well as the accusation, trial, and conviction of her handsome a-hole husband Trout Shue.

We descend 120 feet below Earth’s surface to visit the Lost World Caverns. Too hot for ya outside? Enjoy the 45 minute underground tour where the temperature is always 52 degrees.

Patrons say the samll unassuming mom and pop joint ‘When Pigs Fly BBQ’ is some of the best bbq in the state of West Virginia. With a slogan like, “More meat falls off of our sandwich than the other guy puts on his.”, we say it’s worth a try. Sunday BBQ buffet? yes, please!!!

Brett’s Top 5 is filled with jail time, food stamps, and the biggest family reunion in the US.

We send out the love to Jayme Rae, Amy humbly apologizes to Nita for her blatant lack of Viking knowledge ……….and will somebody tell Denny ‘The Meme War King” Kish to call us? Dude is hilarious!

All this and more, on episdoe 89 of the Travel Oddities Podcast.

“Only two kinds of people ever leave Lewisburg West Virginia – those who will return and those who wish they could.”

87 – Beast of Busco – Churubusco, IN

Play

While Harley’s away, Brett and Amy will play. We test the bounds of our PG rating.

On this week’s episode, Brett and Amy take you into the Indiana backwoods to look for the elusive Beast of Busco in Churobusco Indiana.

Known as Turtle Town USA, Churobusco has one of the longest running cryptozoological festivals in America- “Turtle Days.” held annually in June.

Seems like a lot of hub bub for a little ole turtle, but this legendary beast is bigger than a dining room table and weighs more than 500 pounds.

Access to the Beast of Busco site of the sightings is on private property today. “No trespassing” signs are posted, so please check out the town, the local street art and the giant turtle shell at the local McDonald’s, but be respectful of the actual property.

We discuss Little Turtle, AKA Michikinikwa, Miami people chief and military leader.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and we found a magical burger landmark decorated in clowns. Lots of clowns. Magic Wand Restaurant famous Indiana landmark that is also a family friendly diner. Of course they serve a mean Turtle sundae.

The Top 5 just gets weirder as time goes by…maybe it’s just Brett.

Cryptid Con is coming up very soon, so be sure to check their site if you are going to be in the area.

86 – Route 55: Indian Curse Road-Deptford, NJ

Play

We have discovered some very interesting facts in our new studio. The most important fact is that our studio was built directly upon a tornado siren and they test this siren on Saturdays at noon. These tests appear to last about seventeen hours!

On this episode Harley and Brett took a little trip down a cursed highway to the town of Deptford, NJ in Gloucester County.

Before the construction of Route 55 in Deptford, the town was warned by an honest to goodness Native American Chief that this construction would disturb the ancestral spirits and that the construction should be rerouted. In accordance with all curse movies, this advice was completely ignored, and that is where the “fun” began.

We discuss the travel appeal of the area and there will be an upcoming odd spot show to cover the Red Bank Battlefield as an ademdum to this show.
We found an oddity inside of an oddity….Oddity Oddities?

No episode of Travel Oddities would be complete without a great place to eat. We have found a great little Italian inspired restaurant that will make your mouth water. If you go to Cugini’s in Deptford, try the Cuginirotti and report back!

The Travel Oddities Top Five includes every weird factoid about the state of New Jersey. Okay, that is a blatant lie, but we refuse to retract that statement, so just except it and share with your friends.

Don’t let the fear of curses stop you from a vacation to Deptford. Harley has included a defense against curses that will leave you feeling so fresh and so clean, or maybe smelling like you run a head-shop.

Amy is not on this episode, but that is okay, and we do not need any freak-outs by the Amy-Squad. We haven’t locked her in the basement or anything…

84 – Meriwether Lewis Conspiracy – Hohenwald, TN

Play

Amy, Brett and Harley have been scheming and plotting lots of new material and formats for the show. On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy skip the travel by sea and opt for the sketchier Natchez Trace, a dangerous trail in a very remote area of Tennessee…or at least it used to be during the late 1700’s. Now the town of Hohenwald, TN is like a step back in time with a diverse mix of sites all packed into a small area – an Amish settlement and General Store, award-winning wineries, working Alpaca and horse farms, a 1960’s era commune and streams, waterfalls, and beautiful forests.

We cover the conspiracy around the death of famed explorer, Meriwether Lewis of Lewis & Clark fame.

The oddity of this conspiracy is that it seems to have been largely ignored by history

The views from the Natchez Trace are incredible and the entire area is steeped in history.

If you are planning a trip to visit the grave of Lewis, there is plenty of other things to do in the area…so make a few days of the trip.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and you cannot beat a place with a name like the Junkyard Dog Steakhouse. Warning: They do not serve elephant.

83 – Haunted Red Onion Brothel – Skagway, AK

Play

Amy, Brett and Harley have been slaving away for your listening pleasure. On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy took the a cruise to explore one of the coldest, darkest and most stunning places in the US, Skagway, AK.

We discuss the Haunted Red Onion Brothel(also known as the Red Onion Saloon), and yes the haunting originates with a gold rush era lady of the night.

This oddity is not the most spooky, but does include a few Travel Oddities firsts.

The views are hugely responsible for the 900,000 annual tourists that stop into Skagway every year.

Amy is actively trying to start a feud with another podcast or more specifically, a “toaster.”

If you are planning a trip to Red Onion Brothel in Skagway, we have included some other activities in the area that should make the trip complete.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and the Sippin’ Sasquatch is a definite win. You can eat reindeer, moose, or you can just grab an espresso and a Squatch-Dog.

Brett’s Alaska Top 5 is complete, but we have kept him in the basement until he finishes the rest of his homework.

81 – Gallinipper – Averasboro, NC

Play

Better bring the bug spray and join Amy and Harley investigate the Gallinipper as we explore the ghost town of Averasboro, NC. On this week’s episode, we have a ton of history on one of the weirdest cryptids we have ever covered.

What is a Gallinipper? How about a man-sized mosquito that can drain all of your blood in one gulp.

This oddity has a long and varied history with ties to Native American lore and connections to England and India.

Although the town of Averasboro is all but defunct, you can still visit the area, and feed the mosquitos. You can also stop by the stump of the Gypsy Pine and maybe come face-to-face with a Genius Loci or Land Spirit.

Amy tries to once again explain why she is a big baby that will let a few man-sized bugs keep her away from the experience of a lifetime.

If you are planning a trip to North Carolina to search for the Gallinipper, bring some Raid, you are gonna need it!

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and you really need to check out Fred Chason’s Grandsons for some hot-off-the-grill bar-b-que chicken and a tall glass of sweet tea.

Brett has found The Top 5 things you never knew that you really needed to know when visiting North Carolina.

80 – Dark Watchers – Big Sur, CA

Play

Yes, we know the days of the week and that Wednesday is after Monday. Amy and Harley have the summertime allergies, so please forgive the snotty sounds. On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy get to the choppa to explore one of the most beautiful places in the US, Big Sur, CA.

We discuss the Dark Watchers. Are these guys just the Hatman on vacation?

This oddity is spooky, but don’t let that sway you from this gorgeous wildlife reserve.

The views are one reason that Big Sur was ranked second among all United States destinations in TripAdvisor’s 2008 Travelers’ Choice Destination Awards.

Amy explains why she is a big baby that will let a few bugs keep her away from the experience of a lifetime.

If you are planning a trip to see the Dark Watchers in Big Sur, there has been some flooding and some of the roads are closed. Plan ahead or be a helicopter pilot.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and we found a great burger at a place where you can watch the majestic condors fly off with toddlers…if you are lucky.

The Top 5 has finally been liberated from the LAW.
