122 – Puckwudgies – Anderson IN

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley is back from his trip to Florida and he and Brett use the frequent flyer miles to visit Anderson, Indiana.

Brett got to revisit one of his worst fears…little things.

Puckwudgies are knee high(an average knee high) forest spirits with a taste for blood and apparently the Mounds State Park has been overrun.

What is Puckwudgie?

What can you do to increase your chances of a Puckwudgie encounter?

Do Puckwudgies like Skittles?

From festivals, museums, hiking, and theatre to shopping, racing, and a casino, Anderson, IN has something for everyone all year long. There is a reason that it is called the Pittsburgh on White River.

Puckwudgies weren’t scary enough? There is more…Indy Scream Park is rated one of the scariest Halloween events in the country.

You don’t have to have your black belt to eat at Ninja of Japan, but maybe something with an elastic waist might help.

The Top 5 is not Muppet friendly.

109 – Lalaurie Mansion – New Orleans, LA

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett are gearing up for Mardi Gras in the most unique city in America, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Harley is a year older and apparently the light is fading fast…you know, because he is 44.

We have a great interview with Lyn Gibson, aka The Twisted Southern Horror Queen about Madame Lalaurie and the Lalaurie Mansion. Madame Lalaurie might have been the sickest person alive at the time.

New Orleans is one of the world’s most fascinating cities – it’s home to a truly unique melting pot of cultures, and we explore some of the more unusual aspects.

We found a way to get a real behind-the-scenes look at New Orleans Mardi Gras at Mardi Gras World.

Harley and Brett never stop scouring a town until we find something awesome to eat…and we found the fat dude at BigCheezy at Henry’s uptown Bar. This place takes the grilled cheese to a whole new level.

The Travel Oddities Top Five is full of music and good times, just like New Orleans, LA.

101 – Blythe Intaglios – Blythe, CA

Play

Brett and Harley are traveling back to the west coast, to get a bird’s eye view of an oddity that Giorgio Tsoukalos would flip his lid to visit. Welcome to Blythe, CA, home of the mysterious Blythe Intaglios.

The story of the Blythe Intaglios starts several thousand years ago….or in a galaxy far, far away. The mysterious builders of these gigantic geoglyphs are still an unknown. Don’t you worry, we have more than a theory or two and we are here to share.

Aside from being home to one mystical oddity, Blythe California is known as the center of the water sport universe and is one of the most beautiful stretches of California desert that you can find.

We also found a gem of a spot for any rock-hound. The Hauser Geode Beds are famous for the rich and varied gem filled geodes, hiking camping and family fun.

With a rebel yell, The Travel Oddities Podcast cried, more, more, more…BBQ. Rebel BBQ is the embodiment of everything a restaurant should be and they have a BLT that tears me up just writing this.

The Top 5 from California includes several break-downs by Brett and Harley, but we were setup by Amy. …so really listen to the show or the tree-huggers win!

86 – Route 55: Indian Curse Road-Deptford, NJ

Play

We have discovered some very interesting facts in our new studio. The most important fact is that our studio was built directly upon a tornado siren and they test this siren on Saturdays at noon. These tests appear to last about seventeen hours!

On this episode Harley and Brett took a little trip down a cursed highway to the town of Deptford, NJ in Gloucester County.

Before the construction of Route 55 in Deptford, the town was warned by an honest to goodness Native American Chief that this construction would disturb the ancestral spirits and that the construction should be rerouted. In accordance with all curse movies, this advice was completely ignored, and that is where the “fun” began.

We discuss the travel appeal of the area and there will be an upcoming odd spot show to cover the Red Bank Battlefield as an ademdum to this show.
We found an oddity inside of an oddity….Oddity Oddities?

No episode of Travel Oddities would be complete without a great place to eat. We have found a great little Italian inspired restaurant that will make your mouth water. If you go to Cugini’s in Deptford, try the Cuginirotti and report back!

The Travel Oddities Top Five includes every weird factoid about the state of New Jersey. Okay, that is a blatant lie, but we refuse to retract that statement, so just except it and share with your friends.

Don’t let the fear of curses stop you from a vacation to Deptford. Harley has included a defense against curses that will leave you feeling so fresh and so clean, or maybe smelling like you run a head-shop.

Amy is not on this episode, but that is okay, and we do not need any freak-outs by the Amy-Squad. We haven’t locked her in the basement or anything…

82 – The Curse of Julia Brown – Manchac LA

Play

We are almost back on track for our Monday release. Amy has a note from her Witch Doctor, so you cannot comment on her snotty sounds. On this week’s episode, Harley and Amy drop their kayaks into the swamp of Louisiana to explore one of the murkiest places in the US, Manchac, LA.

We discuss the Curse of Julia Brown or Julia White or Julia Black. This curse was strong enough to tear through the entire state of Louisiana.

This oddity is spooky by itself, but if you throw in alligators and giant mosquitoes, Amy won’t even consider an expedition.

Cajun Pride Tours takes guests on tours of the swamp, the island where Julia Brown’s grave is located. The graveyard is on private land and can only be accessed on a Cajun Pride swamp tour.

Harley wins the Father of the Year Award.

If you are planning to travel to the grave site of Julia Brown or the Manchac Swamp, be sure to take the biggest bridge over a giant swamp thingy and watch out for the Rougarou…he is hangin’ out around here.

The Travel Oddities Podcast team is willing to meet at Middendorf’s for some fried catfish…if you want to arrange the travel(and pay).
The Top 5 seems to be less about Louisiana and more about Brett’s obsession with Nic Cage.
