98 – Haunted Ortega Highway – Lake Elsinore, CA

Play

Happy Monday, Odd Squad! On this super spooky episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast, Brett and Harley have partially recovered from an electrically charged ESP test just in time for a trip down the Haunted Ortega Highway in Lake Elsinore, California.

Highway 74 or the Haunted Ortega Highway has claims of hauntings and many other odd sightings, and since it has seen more than its fair share of death, it’s no wonder why it is considered one of the most haunted places in California. From phantom clowns to crazed gnomes to the truly unspeakable, this stretch of road has something for every paranormal thrill seeker.

If you find that you are brave enough to take this highway, the spoils are more than worth the trip. Lake Elsinore, CA is a beautiful resort town nestled in the Santa Ana Mountains with breathtaking views and activities for every taste.

If you need some assistance to make it past the paranormal, the boys share the recipe for a witch’s bottle. We cannot guarantee the effectiveness, but we can guarantee it is really gross.

Road trips, even terrify road trips on haunted highways are our jam, but if you want to skip that piece, maybe you can “jump” past the obstacles. Skydive Elsinore is world renown of its thermals…so dive on in.

If breakfast all day is more your speed, we have you covered. The Lookout Roadhouse has been voted the best breakfast in town, and the patio offers mountain top views that will blow you away.

Listen to the show already, I am sick of typing!

97 – Wisconsin Death Trip – Black River Falls, WI

Play

ODDTOBER has drawn to an end and the weather is turning colder. There’s a distinct chill in the air and the darkness of night comes earlier and earlier. So, settle in with Brett and Amy as they tell the tale of the horrors of Wisconsin in the late 19th century.

In 1973, Michael Lesy published the now cult classic, Wisconsin Death Trip. In the last decade of the 19th century, life in Black River Falls was filled with madness, suicide, murder, disease and child mortality. The horrors perpetrated by the citizens of Jackson County are depicted in stark reality in the photographs taken between 1890 and 1910 by a local photographer, with extracts from the local newspaper, the Badger State Banner, and from the records of the local mental asylum.

All this murder and madness can work up an appetite so we’ll stop by Re-Pete’s Saloon and Grill for some tasty treats. We’ll tell you all about the famous Re-Pete Offender and how you can win your very own Re-Pete t-shirt.

If you’re ready to walk off that giant lunch, we’ll take a trip to the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center. Learn all about the annual Wisconsin Cranberry Festival as you tour the interactive cranberry museum. Stop by the vintage ice cream parlor for a variety of cranberry flavored ice creams and visit their gift shop for some fantastic cranberry treats.

69 – Axe Murder House – Villisca, Iowa

Play

On a quiet small town street there is an old white house with an ominous background, but you might just pass right by if it weren’t for the GIANT sign that reads, THE VILLISCA MURDER HOUSE, in blood red letters. On this week’s episode, episode 69, Harley travels the dusty roads of Iowa to find out more about The Villisca Murder House in lovely Villisca Iowa.

This oddity has it all. “Mrs. X? She murders her husbands on their honeymoons, then changes her identity and marries again.” Okay, maybe that is the wrong axe murderer.

Luckily, I had a an expert to give us the real scoop on this real weird house. Jason Offutt, author of How to Kill Monsters Using Common Household Items, What Lurks Beyond: The paranormal in your backyard, and many other books.

Jason shares his personal experience with the Villisca Murder House and how he convinced his day job to pay for it all…I added that last part for dramatic effect.

I discuss Villisca, IA, and a Viking Lake.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and wicked cool restaurants with ridiculously named burgers are really in my wheelhouse.
