123 – Mystery of the Spider Rocks – Baird, TX

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett are feeling a little rusty, but excited about a little place called Baird, Texas.

Brett doesn’t believe in the thrill of the hunt, but he does believe in the power of antiques.

The Mystery of the Spider Rocks is all about Coronado’s mythical stash of gold from the seven cities of Cibola or about the gold of the Spanish conquistadors from the early 1700s.

The Spider Rocks are not giant spider eggs nor do they have anything to do with Spiderman.

Where should you start your hunt for the gold?

Baird TX is hot, but there is still a lot to do in the area.

If you aren’t on the hunt for treasure, Frontier Texas! is a world class interactive museum and visitor center located in downtown Abilene, Texas.

Lytle Land and Cattle Company may be the treasure you have really been looking for…..Texans know their steak.

121 – Caddo Lake State Park Bigfoot – Uncertain, TX

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett kick off summer right with a trip to Uncertain, Texas. Yes, we are sure.

Harley had a great interview with Ken Gerhard, a cryptozoologist and field investigator for The Centre for Fortean Zoology. We discuss the Caddo Lake State Park Bigfoot and the similar sightings in the area including some outings with Lyle Blackburn and the Fouke Monster.

What is Bigfoot?

What can you do to increase your chances of a Bigfoot encounter?

What is the Devil’s Elbow?

What project is Ken working on?

Uncertain, TX was originally called this by the surveyors, because they were Uncertain to whether this place was in Texas or Louisianna. The local sheriff was quoted as saying, “You’ve got to either know where you’re goin’ or be lost to find it.”

Need more Bigfoot? The Texas Bigfoot Research Center runs the Original Texas Bigfoot Conference just down the road in Jefferson, TX. Check it out and you just might meet. Bob Gimlin, Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Lyle Blackburn, Ken Gerhard, Nick Redfern, or Shelly Covington-Montana.

The Shady Glade Cafe may be the only restaurant around, but that hasn’t stopped them from making some crazy good country cookin’!

The Top 5 is bigger in Texas.

74 – Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose, TX

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Josh walk barefoot in the beautiful Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas.

This oddity starts a few hundred million years ago, takes a detour to the British Isles and ends up in a Druid grove.

We had a great interview with John Beckett, author of The Path of Paganism: An Experience-Based Guide to Modern Pagan Practice. On top of being an author, John is a blogger and….oh yeah, he is a DRUID.

John explains how one might become a druid or pagan. He also discusses his experience at Dinosaur Valley State Park.

In The News: Festival of the Steel Phallus in Kawasaki, Japan. Sorry, we don’t make the news, we just report it.

We discuss Glen Rose, TX. For a town of under 3000 residents, there is a surprising amount of fun activities in the area.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and any place that regularly has a two-hour wait, must be great.

Play

cover

Pitch a tent and tip -toe through Boggy Creek with Brett and Harley as they travel to Fauke Arkansas with a Beast of an Oddity and thats just the Monster Mart. On this weeks episode we visit Fauke, Arkansas and investigate the story behind the 1972 cult classic “The Boggy Creek Monster” with the man who literally wrote the book on the ‘The Beast” with “The Beast of Boggy Creek “.Crypto legend, author, producer and musician ; Lyle Blackburn. Gather around the campfire as Lyle takes you on a guided tour of Fauke and tells you what stories inspired him as a child and what stories still give him the chills to this very day. We talk about how a little hole in the wall Oddity shop became a “Monster Quest” of a road trip destination.
So pack up the Henderson’s and strap in for the long haul…. Cause Travel Oddities snagged Lyle Blackburn Ya’ll.

lyle

Our news story this week comes from Futurism Magazine. Can scientists generate power that will last long after the robots have taken over? Are Nuclear Diamonds actually forever? Researchers from some fancy college with two names seem to think so.

What The Actual Fauke!? If you’re planning your next trip on a tankful Lyle puts his “Beastly” reputation on the line with everything from the best burger to best donut in town. Not to mention the Monster of all Marts….Monster Mart.

PUP TENTS BEWARE!!! Plenty of primitive campsites in the Fauke and Boggy Creek areas there aren’t many places for lodging so roughing it is the order of the day. So Heed the Beasts call and beware of Nightfall.

Lest we forget the Arkansas Top 5. More fun facts about Arkansas than Bigfoot can shake a stick at. Brett’s personal favorite’s no less

Brett attempts to channel his inner Matthew Mac….AGAIN…
