132 – The Alabama White Thang – Decatur, AL

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett are headed back to Sweet Home Alabama to hunt down the White Thang in Decatur, AL.

Decatur is located on the Tennessee River in Morgan County, Alabama. It has a rich history and activities for any traveler.

So, what is the Alabama White Thang, aside from being a misspelled cryptid?

Let’s just say that it is a big, white and scary bigfoot, dog, lion thang.

Do you like your cryptids to scream in your face?

If you don’t like being yelled at by mythical creatures, may we suggest checking out some of the best bbq while listening to live entertainment at the Riverfest BBQ and Music Fest?

This event is held on the third weekend in September every year.

We stop in at The Railyard. This is a Farm To Fork Restaurant in Historic Downtown Decatur.

115 – Huggin’ Molly – Abbeville, AL

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett fight the spring snow to explore Abbeville, Alabama, you know….the Yellowhammer State, the “Heart of Dixie” or the “CottonState”.

We discuss a creepy haunting, phantom, cryptid or something called Huggin’ Molly. How scary can it be with a name like Huggin’ Molly?

This oddity may or may not scare you, but don’t let that keep you from traveling here. The town is like a time-capsule.

The Statue of Leroy Brown, the famous fish? Yes we are telling fish stories and ours is bigger than yours.

Brett spends some time explaining his theories on hugs and he is offering free hugs from the back of his panel van. So come one, come all…

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite. Huggin’ Molly’s restaurant obviously has been listening to our show. They have the lore and they built a store! If you run into the propriators…..tell them we accept cash or card.

The Top 5 was instrumental in the completion of this episode.

Specials thanks to Logan for the beautiful feedback and for sharing his story.

111 – Wolf Woman of Mobile – Mobile, AL

Play

All right, Oddballs, this one is a little strange, but Mobile, AL is way cooler than the weather forecasts would lead you to believe. This melting pot of people, flavors, cultures and traditions has much to offer, both traditional and supernatural.

Have you ever heard of the wolf-woman of Mobile? Witnesses described the creature as “pretty and hairy,” and “the top half was a woman and the bottom was a wolf.” Lock your doors and bar your windows, this creature is terrifying and more woman than you can handle.

While you’re running from the wolf-woman, stop by the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial and take the self guided tour of the USS Alabama, the Korean War Memorial or the Vietnam War memorial. They have a submarine…jest sayin’.

With all that running from were-creatures and walking tours of battleships, you might work up an appetite. Might we recommend Wintzell’s Oyster House? This historic landmark on Dauphin Street in has been cooking up grub for over 75 years.

We had to wrestle bears to get the Alabama Top 5!

105 – Specters of Bear Creek Swamp – Prattville AL

Play

Harley and Amy are traveling to swamp country, to soak in an oddity that has all the makings of a terrifying thrill ride. Welcome to Prattville, AL, home of the Specters of Bear Creek Swamp.

The phenomenon in this area go way back into the past and there is something for everybody. From ghosts to bigfoot and chupacabra to haunted dolls…this place really has it all.

There is definitley some weirdness in the swamps her, but Prattville is older than the state of Alabama and there are activities for any taste. This is a road trip that you have to make.

If you don’t want to trudge through the swamp, you could always take part in their annual 4th of July cardboard boat race.

The Travel Oddities Podcast restaurant pick is a place called Fat Boy’s BBQ Ranch because Amy’s diet has given her a one-=track-appetite.

The Top 5…Did you know that Alabama has a state biscuit? Do they have state gravy? Listen to the show already!
