Do you know about the phantoms of Spirit Lake, Idaho?

On episode 134 of the Travel Oddities Podcast, Harley and Brett confront the ghosts(plural) that are said to inhabit the beautiful waters of Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake, ID is a logging town and we are fairly certain that is a Travel Oddities first.
Not only is this place picturesque with a scenic downtown, they have an activity for any outdoor enthusiast.

Like so many of the legends we discuss, this one starts with some spooky Native American legends. The Phantoms of Spirit Lake have their origin in these legends, and whether you are a believer or you just love the stories, this one has you covered.

What is the story behind the phantoms?

When is the best time of year to run into a phantom?

If you like your adrenaline spikes to originate from something a little more mundane, then you are going to love Silverwood Theme Park in Athol, Idaho. It is located in beautiful North Idaho, and has over 65 rides, slides, shows and attractions, including one that was voted best in the country by Travel Channel.

After your adventures in this town, you are going to need to refuel, and Messy’s Burgers is just the place to do that. Messy’s is a quick food restaurant in beautiful Spirit Lake, Idaho. Serving burgers, rippers (deep fried hotdogs), milkshake and floats.

Brett and Harley have not been able to come to a truce on the review front, so strap in, it gets really bleepy!

110 – Flying Heads – Northville, NY

Play

On this week’s episode, Harley and Brett are loading the van for a trip into the forest in Adirondack Park, in Northville, New York.

Brett is self-medicating with probiotics, and that is not the weirdest thing that is happening in this episode.
We are investigating the Flying Heads, a cannibalistic monster or spirit from Iroquois and Wyandot mythology. This legend breaks all of the rules, so don’t try to use your movie knowledge to get away from this show.

Northville, NY is just one of the towns that is associated with the Adirondack Park, and there is something for everyone here. Its 6 million acres is home to 105 villages and they never lock the gates. This place has an endless selection of breathtaking hiking trails, kayaking, canoeing, breweries, wineries and more.

Harley and Brett found another Travel Oddities first, a restaurant that you can float right up to. Float into the Sports Island Pub and Restaurant and have yourself a cheesesteak!

The Travel Oddities Top Five is playing shirts versus skins against NY and NY picked skins…

104 – Thom Reed’s UFO Encounter – Sheffield, MA

Play

On this week’s episode, Brett and Amy break out their Bostonian accents to explore one of the coolest places in the US, Sheffield, MA.

We discuss the Thom Reed’s UFO encounter.

This oddity is spooky because of the validity of Thom’s account.

The history behind the Ashley House is something we didn’t know before we looked into this location.

Amy , again, hates all things outdoors. If you are not like Amy, than you will love the idea of traveling to Sheffield.

No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and we found a something for everyone at Bish Bash Brew and Que.

The Top 5 is for the dogs.

97 – Wisconsin Death Trip – Black River Falls, WI

Play

ODDTOBER has drawn to an end and the weather is turning colder. There’s a distinct chill in the air and the darkness of night comes earlier and earlier. So, settle in with Brett and Amy as they tell the tale of the horrors of Wisconsin in the late 19th century.

In 1973, Michael Lesy published the now cult classic, Wisconsin Death Trip. In the last decade of the 19th century, life in Black River Falls was filled with madness, suicide, murder, disease and child mortality. The horrors perpetrated by the citizens of Jackson County are depicted in stark reality in the photographs taken between 1890 and 1910 by a local photographer, with extracts from the local newspaper, the Badger State Banner, and from the records of the local mental asylum.

All this murder and madness can work up an appetite so we’ll stop by Re-Pete’s Saloon and Grill for some tasty treats. We’ll tell you all about the famous Re-Pete Offender and how you can win your very own Re-Pete t-shirt.

If you’re ready to walk off that giant lunch, we’ll take a trip to the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center. Learn all about the annual Wisconsin Cranberry Festival as you tour the interactive cranberry museum. Stop by the vintage ice cream parlor for a variety of cranberry flavored ice creams and visit their gift shop for some fantastic cranberry treats.
